Driver / Shipper Communication
With the practice of double brokering becoming more widespread within the last 2-3 years, communication between the driver and shipper has become increasingly important. Viable communication between the two parties will protect each from fraudulent double brokering.
If you are the shipper there a few things you can do to protect yourself. If dealing with a broker, be sure to know the name of the carrier picking up your shipment. Once the carrier arrives, touch base with the driver to verify the carrier name and the destination of shipment. Also, note the truck number and trailer number on the bill of lading. The bill of lading should have the carrier name and correct destination location. Never load a truck without knowing the carrier name and destination.
If you are the carrier, check in with the proper personnel when arriving at shipper. Be sure to inform the shipper of your company name, destination of the shipment, and the name of the broker. It may also be a good idea to verify this information with dock personnel loading your truck. Upon the completion of loading, verify the information is correct on the bill of lading before departing. If there is a discrepancy immediately report it to the proper shipping personnel. Never leave the shipper without checking the bill of lading.
Although the above items may seem rather simple they are extremely important. Good communication between the driver and shipper will only help eliminate fraudulent double brokering of shipments.
